Organization and How U.Porto Works

The Organization of the University of Porto (U.Porto Structure)

The organization of the services of the University of Porto can comprise:

  • Rectory
  • Organic Units
  • Organic Subunits
  • Grouping of Organic Units
  • Autonomous Services

Rectory

The Rectorate is the service dedicated to the central support to the governance of the University, guaranteeing the regular functioning of the University and its organic units.

Organic Units

Organic Unit is the entity of the organizational model, endowed with its own staff, which can be endowed with a tax personality and which has a direct hierarchical relationship with the central government of the University of Porto.

There may be two types of organic units:

Organic Subunits

The organizational structure of the organic units may include organic subunits, which adopt the name of Department, with simplified management bodies that report hierarchically to the management bodies of the Organic Unit in which they are integrated.

These subunits can be transversal to different organic units reporting to the set of management bodies of these units in terms that can be defined in a specific regulation approved by them.

Grouping of Organic Units

The organic units may be grouped into groups with specific purposes, namely of a strategic nature (which promote and encourage interdisciplinarity in training and research and development activities) or linked to the pursuit of postgraduate training (which can contribute to internationalization and the promotion of quality, interdisciplinarity and excellence).
They are governed by their own regulations or statutes, which will establish their organization and operation mode.

Autonomous Services

Autonomous Services are entities dedicated to ensuring functions to be taken at central level. They enjoy administrative and financial autonomy and depend on the central government of the University of Porto.
If statutes exist, these must be approved by the General Board on a proposal from the Rector.

In the U.Porto there are the following autonomous services, endowed with administrative and financial autonomy:

  • The SASUP (Social Action Services of the University of Porto) are an autonomous service of the U.Porto that aims to ensure the functions of school social action legally provided for.

  • The CRSCUP (Resource and Common Services Centre of the University of Porto), called Shared Services, is an autonomous service of the U.Porto that ensures the sharing of resources and services with a view to greater effectiveness and efficiency of the respective management.

  • The CDUP-UP (Sport Centre of the University of Porto) is an autonomous service of the U.Porto that promotes and ensures the practice of sport by its Academic Community.
