The Astronomical Observatory of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto was renamed Astronomical Observatory Professor Manuel de Barros after the death of the scientist. Research activities related to Earth Sciences, Space and Geographical Engineering take place at this facility, which depends on the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, as well as training and scientific dissemination activities.

2009

On 29 May, the City Council of Esposende celebrated the 101^th anniversary of Professor Manuel de Barros, an event attended by the son and daughter of the honouree, Maria José and Manuel António Barros. The commemorations included the unveiling of street name signs, the reading of a text on the scientist by students from the Henrique Medina Secondary School, a conference entitled "Professor Manuel Gonçalves Pereira de Barros, A Notable Scientist and Professor – on the 101^th Anniversary of his Birth" and an exhibition ("Manuel de Barros: Memoirs"), organized by the Municipal Library Manuel de Boaventura.
